Recently finished Placing Routes 4th mural!
See the process photos here.
Due to the extreme heat, and the bureaucratic process, this was one of our most complex/tough projects to date.
Many thanks to the Downtown Austin Alliance for the arts grant we used to fund this project!
Side note: we've caught various people using the mural a backdrop. See images below. The first shows a Harley Quinn posing, the second shows a couple getting their engagement photos taken in front of it, the third (somewhat vaguely) a group of people taking turns imitating butterflies, and the fourth photo shows someone pretending to catch the butterflies... and last but not least, a response from the office building across the street.
*many thanks to D. Buckman and A. Wegmann for contributing photos!

Anna Garforth
In the process of researching the improvised street art class , I came across Anna Garforth's work (I just googled "urban land art", and she came up first)...beautiful, often temporal, and inspiring.
Visit her website, and scroll through some of her projects under the "work" tab--and check out her blog.
I may need to rename the class...urban land art may be more apt.

A Mash Up of Two of My Favorite Things...
Improv and street art!
I just started outlining a short class about improvised street art I hope to teach this summer...have to pitch it to Austin Free Skool...so we'll see if it happens or not. But it's fun to think about...
So aside from one's first hand experiences, where does one begin? Because I'm curious about what else exists out there, I just googled "improvised street art" and came across this and a few other things.
In some ways, all street art is improvised....you're not buying a particular pristine canvas, instead you're working with what is there...a wall, a crack, a sidewalk. Even so, I'd like to try to take it more the Andy Goldsworthy route, and see what people come up with when they work with what the natural + urban environment provides them with.
Stay tuned.

Wow
I think I'm in love with this woman: Candy Chang.
Such an amazing interdisciplinary practice... if I could pick a philosophical/artistic mentor...she'd be it.

This week...
Placing Routes will present their latest design, slated for 721 E 8th St, to the Arts and Entertainment committee of the Downtown Austin Alliance. And then on Monday....we present the same design to the Historic Landmarks Commission. This could be tricky.... The mural will be considered a temporary addition, but who knows how they will react to the color. I guess we'll have to wait and see!
